Introduction to rock climbing

Aimed at those who would like to experience the challenge of rock climbing for the first time or for those who would like to progress from an indoor wall.

During this course we will cover basic rope work techniques, anchors, climbing calls, gear choice, moving on rock and retreat from the crag. At the end of a five-day course you should have all the skills you need to look after yourself as a seconding climber. We will climb at a variety of crags and also have the possibility of climbing a multi-pitch classic.

No experience is needed, but a good general level of fitness is required.

Learn to lead

For climbers who have been seconding and would now like to progress to the sharp end of the rope; we can provide a safe environment to learn new skills and polish your existing ones.

Areas that we will cover throughout this course can include a revision of current skills, equipment choice, placement of protection, stance management, belay set up, protecting an abseil for yourself and your second and guide book use.

There will be plenty of opportunities to focus on specific areas that you might like to brush up on. We will also try to include an ascent of a local multi pitch classic on our courses that are longer than 2 days.

Ropes and rescue

Prusikking…assisted/unassisted hoists…escaping the system…aid climbing…retreviable systems…klemheists…lowering…passing a knot…

Self rescue is a phrase that is often used in the climbing world and can mean a thousand different things. There are no hard and fast rules about what to do when things haven’t gone exactly as planned. We understand that problem solving is a jigsaw made up of lots of different pieces and we have experience in working in many different areas of rescue and first aid. As well as teaching hard skills we place an emphasis in teaching safe principles that can be applied to many situations.
