About us

Bill Strachan - company founder

I have a great love of the Scottish outdoors and am enthusiastic about teaching and introducing others to climbing and walking in the highlands and islands of Scotland. I believe a day on the hills (as the saying goes...) is ‘about the journey, not the destination’ and want to provide my clients with an experience of Scotland and the outdoors that will be enjoyable and inspirational.

I set up Scotch on the Rocks Guiding in 2002 to allow myself the freedom and flexibility to provide individually tailored and customer focused itineraries to enthusiastic and motivated clients. Since that time Scotch on the Rocks Guiding has been providing professional guiding, instruction and navigation courses for groups and individuals.

I am a full member of the Association of Mountaineering Instructors and hold the Mountain Instructor Certificate (MIC), the highest UK award for climbing and mountaineering. I am also a WEMT and experienced Emergency Medical Technician and have worked extensively on height safety, rope rescue and confined space training workshops.

All staff who work with Scotch on the Rocks Guiding are suitably qualified and experienced and share my passion for Scotland and the outdoors.

What you will find throughout our website is by no means a comprehensive list of what we offer, more of a selection to give you ideas. It doesn’t matter if you are a veteran of the Scottish Mountains or discovering them for the first time, we are happy to mix and match courses and days to suit your needs.

We encourage you to get in touch so we can discuss exactly what YOU would like to get out of your trip.

Scotch on the Rocks Guiding - Provider of the Summer Mountain Leader Award

We are proud to be providers of Summer ML Training and Assessment courses. As company director I see this as a core part of our business and gain great satisfaction from assisting others with the progression in their own careers.

Please contact us if you would like any further information about our company or courses, and remember... advice is always free and readily given.

Join the Mountaineering Council of Scotland

We are also proud to support the Mountaineering Council of Scotland. If you're an active walker, climber or skier, MCofS membership will help you get the most out of Scotland's mountain, hill crags and climbing walls.

The MCofS is the only organisation that represents, supports and promotes the wide range of activities enjoyed by Scotland's walking, climbing and skiing community. By joining the MCofS you will help support their vital work and enjoy a wide range of benefits, including money-saving offers, discounts and insurance.
